TEACHING EXPERIENCES

Starting at the earliest and ending with the most recent

AED 489: ADVANCED PRACTICUM [a.k.a SATURDAY ART SCHOOL]

Saturday Art School is a program run by the Pennsylvania State University for local children of ages ranging from 3-18 years old. With assistance from my mentor teachers, my co-teacher, Carolyn, and I ran this eight-week program for middle schoolers; our unit's big idea was the five senses, hence the course's title: "Coming to Our Senses." This experience taught me how to work with middle school children, how to develop curriculum for a classroom, and how to develop relationships within my students and a classroom community. All of the semester's work was curated and displayed in an end of the semester art show in the Zoller Gallery at Penn State.

AED 495: ART EDUCATION STUDENT TEACHING PRACTICUM

In the Fall of 2013, I completed the final step of my Bachelors of Science in Art Education through my student teaching practicum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I was placed in two different schools to give me a true K-12 expereince so I would best be prepared to work in any school community. I worked with middle school students at the Fanny Edel Falk Elementary School (a K-8 private laboratory school connected with the University of Pittsburgh) and elementary-age students at Colfax Elementary (a K-8 neighborhood Pittsburgh public school). These two setting gave me expereinces with children of all ages and varying economic and cultural backgrounds. I planned vigorous curriculum that met the district and state standards while managing classrooms with two drastically different schedule types and class sizes. I worked to make close relationships with my students while planning and instructing art projects that connected in a meaningful way to my students' lives. I worked to integrate myself into the schools by attending faculty meetings, observing master teachers at work, seeking feedback on my personal teaching strategies, collaborating art projects through multiple grade levels, and even organizing an after school event for a project that has made its way out into the Pittsburgh community. The eighth grade yarn bomb suit from Falk was featured in both the First Night Parade of 2014 and within/on the cover of Davis School Arts Magazine in October of 2014.

PITTSBURGH SUBSTITUTE

From January 2014 until June of 2015, I served as a substitute around the city of Pittsburgh, mainly within the Pittsburgh Public School district. My experiences substituting have given me the opportunity to experience the wide variety of school environments, subjects, and students that Pittsburgh has to offer.

GUEST TEACHER AT THE IRMA FREEMAN CENTER FOR IMAGINATION

In August of 2014, children aging from 4 to 6 years old gathered at the IF Center to create puppets! Our main project was to complete a dynamic puppet out of recycled materials to perform on stage for parents/ guardians at the end of our summer camp. For the summer of 2015, I taught three art camps at the IF Center.

VISUAL ARTS AT WESTINGHOUSE ACADEMY
August 2016-Present
Teaching in both the middle and high school, I developed and funded a brand new visual arts program at Westinghouse. The curriculum has been adapted to students needs to build drawing, other related skills, and creative thinking in the realm of visual arts. Their artwork culminates every spring at Westinghouse's Show and the All City Show where students can sell their work to those visiting the show.
